【Playing Beyond Boundaries: From Art to Society】

In the vast Qaidam Basin where fields stretching to the end of horizon are grown with goji berries a heavy metal band sang, "Eating heavy metal goji, listening to heavy metal music..."

In a Hong Kong elderlies' centre, old people who are unable to express their physical pains broke through their limitations by writing poetry and making installation art.

Faced with environment deterioration,

Locked into the reality of sickness and feelings of debility,

Trapped in local difficulties and distant pains,

How can people be empowered with art playing a role in action?

This event features two groups of artists—Nut Brother with his partner Zheng Hongbin, and Lee Waiyi of v-artivist— exploring the gap between art and reality in a complex context. They will share years of practical experiences and observations of how creativity can open up public spaces to respond to societal conditions. They will also engage in a dialogue, inviting participants to think about how creativity can connect communities in response to our era of complex reality.

A public payphone in China began ringing and ringing. Who was calling?

BEIJING – For years, the public payphone in Beijing — demurely shielded by its bulbous, yellow cover — sat underused, eclipsed by the rise of the smartphone. Then on a Saturday in July it began ringing … and ringing … and ringing. It rang every
